1 - MULTI-FAMILY ENERGY COMMUNITY PROTOTYPE
The Living Empower Building is a multi-parcel low-rise design in Santa Ana that covers 3 square miles. The proposed design will replace an underutilized 1960s C-class office complex with 235 apartments. This iconic project is an affordable multi-family complex, the first in California to integrate 100% electric, a community mobile dApp, a virtual power plant, a Microgrid, and an EV Coop for residents to joint as part time of full time zero emission delivery job.
The vision for the project is to decarbonize disadvantaged communities (DACs) while providing affordable, reliable energy that benefits both customers and the electricity grid. The project aims to create the first zero-net energy multifamily affordable development that unites residents, buildings, and businesses through interactive, people-powered energy statement pieces that beckon the industry to develop replicable, equitable, and connected energy communities.

2 - SINGLE-FAMILY ENERGY COMMUNITY PROTOTYPE
The project in Los Angeles County is funded by the California Energy Commission (CEC) and focuses on the neighborhoods of Basset and Avocado Heights, located in the San Gabriel Valley. These majority-Latinx communities have suffered from pollution from three major freeways and industrial businesses adjacent to the project site.
The project Community Solar provides electricity to 350 homes, the largest Community Solar Installation in California. The project will also provide 50 homes with no-cost solar and residential battery storage (Virtual Power Plant) and will develop an electric vehicle (EV) mobility service, EV charging infrastructure and a community carbon management system. Other partners include UCLA, Enel X, Grid Alternatives and sonnen.
Installs Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure and develops a zero-emissions transportation program with EV car sharing services that are expected to produce an annual emissions reduction of 30.5 MTCO2e. 5) Develops a Microgrid Resiliency Hub that has both grid-connected and islandable operation modes (up to 4 to 5 hours of stand-alone peak electricity demand capacity). The microgrid prioritizes resiliency and becomes an asset to the community during power outages and extreme heat events.
The BAAEC project is predicated on breaking down the barriers and reducing the complexity for community-scale clean energy projects. Our project will contribute to accelerated decarbonization and equitable economic benefits for other disadvantaged communities across the state and will help ensure that they are not left behind in the transformation of our energy future.
